Sally R. Foster
In Loving Memory (1930 — 2011)
EAST DENNIS, MA — Sarah (Sally) Jean Robertson Foster, 80, died Friday, January 28, 2011 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis after complications from post-surgery recovery. She is survived by four children: Betsy Driscoll and Robert Foster, of East Dennis, MA, Sarah McKenna, of West Warwick, RI, and Mary LaMere of Ogdensburg, NY; son-in-laws Michael Driscoll, Victor McKenna, and Gary LaMere; grandchildren Sean Driscoll, Hannah LaMere, Marissa LaMere, Richard McKenna, and Lucas McKenna; sister Nancy Robertson of Raton, NM; cousins David Roy, Ph.D., Chicago, IL, Ambassador Stapleton Roy, Bethesda, MD, and Emily Oaks, Ph.D., Sterling, NY; nieces Jean Lemmon of Tulsa, OK and Margaret Linsky of Raton, NM; and nephew Andy Robertson, of Albuquerque, NM.
Sally was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania August 12, 1930 to Dr. R. Hugh Robertson, a Philadelphia surgeon, and Jean Caywood Roy. She grew up in Merion, Pennsylvania and graduated from Lower Merion High School. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchburg, VA, where she received her degree in 1952 and was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She worked for a time at the University of Pennsylvania Zoology Department. She met her late husband Dr. Kendall W. Foster, Jr. M.D. at a Zoology Class at Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA in 1952 and they later married in Philadelphia on June 19, 1954.
Quilting was one of Sally's favorite crafts and she showed a number of them in her local quilting group shows. She was a member of Bayberry Quilters and Circle of Friends Quilters. Genealogy was another of her interests. She was an active member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Being the wife of an Army Officer she and her family traveled and lived in four states, Maine, Maryland, Colorado, Connecticut, and in Nuremburg, Germany. She enjoyed the challenges of transporting her children by ocean liner, train, street car, plane, and automobile.
Sally and her husband also lived for many years in Okemos, Michigan before retiring to Cape Cod. While in Michigan they attended many Michigan State University Spartan football games and enjoyed the MSU community. Along with her husband she was a great lover of nature and a bird watcher. She and Ken frequently walked through many nature preserves on Cape Cod and elsewhere and were seen in their parked van watching the osprey nest in Sesuit Harbor every spring.
Sally was a life-long wife and mother to her family of four children, and did that job well with unshakeable love and kindness. She leaves behind many dear friends and acquaintances and will be sorely missed by all.
