Graveyard in Winter Sun

Graveyard in Winter Sun

Landscape • Media: Photograph

I took this photo on a mild Winter day in December 2006 before any snow had fallen. Scenes like this may seem morbid to some. But I find the simple, ancient nature of the gavestones to be a testament to the longevity of the memory of the people buried here. In death these gravestones seem determined to outlive moss, erosion, sun, cold, snow and bird droppings in memory of those lying buried beneath. They continue to stand proud and fast despite the passage of time, perhaps like those they were created in memory of.
