  • USDCHF pulled back from 1.1486
USDCHF pulled back from 1.1486 and formed a sideways consolidation in a range between 1.1128 and 1.1486. Further rally could be seen after consolidation, a break of 1.1486 level will signal resumption of up trend, and the next target would be at 1.1800 zone. Initial support is located at 1.1128, and followed by the up trend line 1.0010 to 1.0693, now at 1.0900 level. For long term analysis, USDCHF is in long term bullish movement. Further rise is still possible to 1.2000 zone after

Sterling also slumped against the Swiss franc, hitting 12-year lows at 1.900 as the Swiss franc

  • Danish Krone Stabilised
The Danish krone (DKK) has been highly volatile lately. It started the month under pressure and we have rea-son to believe that it was the Danish central bank's in-terventions in the foreign exchange market that pre-vented EUR/DKK from drifting too far from central par-ity. The reason behind the pressure was that Euroland deposit rates had drifted substantially higher than Danish deposit rates, ie, EUR/DKK enjoyed a positive carry. The Danish central bank surprised markets late Tuesday by

  • U.S Market Update
    - Markets stared into the abyss this morning as the Dow plunged nearly 800 points and then rapidly sliding below 8000 in the first ten minutes of trading in very heavy volume. Multiple market barometers continue to hit historic levels, including the Vix, which has extended its

For the first time since March 2003, the Dow Jones Industrial Average broke 8000 at the open of the US markets. However just as quickly as stocks dropped 600 points, it recovered more than half of its losses in the first 15 minutes of trading. The capitulation followed by the major short squeeze suggests that we may have seen a near term bottom. This type of volatility drove the VIX index to a record high of 70. GFTforex.com - Weekly Forex Trading Commentary

Global Forex Trading

  • Weekly Forex Market Commentary

The demand for funding out of Europe and ongoing liquidation of yen crosses pushed the dollar sharply higher versus the European currencies last week.  While profit taking should be seen this week, the outlook for the currency remains strong. The risk to it is the equity markets, which have fallen sharply and should sink further, despite the no short-selling rule for financial stocks.

  • Weekly Forex Market Commentary

With the US financial world topsy turvy and with its jewels up for sale at fire prices all eyes on Monday will be on the US Congress and its political games in ratifying the Treasury's Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). This is not the time for games and details are very important. The money market is broken and on this milieu, currencies took a back seat to other asset classes. The dollar is lacking much direction, but given the illiquid trading conditions and the ratification of the TARP, its bias is up.

  • Weekly Forex Market Commentary

The dollar encountered unprecedented lack of liquidity last week (as only cable was affected in 1992/1993 and dollar/yen in 1998) as FX took a secondary position behind classic assets. The government didn’t save the day, but the year and probably the decade with an unprecedented operation to remove toxic assets from banks’ books and allow them to live and fight another day. There were other complex measures, but the bottom line is that we can re-start living our lives and FX will return to normality in early October. The dollar is facing divergent trading, probably strong against the yen and slightly weak versus the European currencies. Th

  • Weekly Forex Market Commentary

Volatility increased last week amid waves of financial turmoil. The problems of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac seem to be in a distant past, even though it’s been only days since they were bailed out by the government, as the world shifted its focus in the sinking fortunes of Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch and AIG. And other big names are being mentioned more and more frequently in the same vein. With commodities under pressure, the oil probed the psychological $100/barrel barrier despite tropical storms threatening the Gulf Coast oil business.  But the dollar rallied too much, too fast, and this week should see it on the losing side of the ga

  • Weekly Forex Market Commentary

The dollar rallied big across the board and the surge started in a sneaky way during the Labor Day holiday. This upmove reflects mainly liquidation of long-term short dollar positions. The burst of the commodity bubble helped, but let’s not get carried away while a barrel of oil still costs more than $100. Only dollar/yen collapsed because of ongoing long liquidation of yen crosses, including carry trades. But mind you, only the dollar and the yen can rally while their economies suffer.  So, hold long dollar/Europe and dollar/antipodeans with ginger care. Just in case it wasn’t crystal clear before, the horrible US jobless data told us tha

  • Great Britain Pound Drops in Forex Trading
Sterling savaged on the FX marketAs the financial crisis continues, and investors give in to panic, things are getting hairy in all the financial markets. On top of the issue surrounding the economy, though, things are further being complicated by the dispute between the U.K. and Iceland with regard to financial assets.

Bloomberg offers a look at the charges flying on both sides of the snafu:

Brown said Iceland is failing to honor its guarantee to cover overseas savers on accounts that it usually backs up to 20,887 euros ($28,400), leaving Britain to pick up the tab. Iceland's Prime Minister Geir Haarde said the U.K. government is to blame for triggering the crisis when it used anti-terrorism laws to seize the assets of Icelandic banks in the U.K.

The sterling is dropping on the FX market against the euro, dollar and the yen.

  • South Korean Won Slows Its Losses in Currency Trading
Forex trading with Asian currenciesOne of the issues with the South Korean won in currency trading on the FX market has been its rather remarkable drop in recent weeks. It has been said that speculators have been driving the won down in FX trading.

Things are changing in favor of the won, however. The government is saying it is going to crack down, and the rumors that speculators are going to be able to keep the won down are drying up. The Forex Blog reports on how the international community is reacting to the South Korean won in currency trading now:

As a result, a sudden surge of foreign capital poured into Korea, as investors returned with renewed vigor, confident that the Korean government is prepared to deal domestically with the crisis that is gripping global financial markets.

  • Japanese Yen Forex Trading Forecast
Yen headed for weekly gainThings are looking pretty good for the Japanese yen forex trading forecast. Yesterday, the yen was struggling a bit in currency trading, but that all changed yesterday afternoon as the U.S. stock market plunged and risk aversion became a Big Thing again.

Right now, the yen is headed for a weekly gain in FX trading as investors make safe haven moves. MarketWatch reports on the yen's new status in currency trading:

"It's risk aversion," said Haruya Ida, a foreign exchange analyst at Thomson Reuters IFR in Tokyo. "The yen has taken on the cachet of a safe haven currency similar to the Swiss franc in the past simply because the Japanese banking system seems to be a little bit stronger than banking systems abroad."

Loonie down in currency trading on the FX marketAmidst all the economic turmoil and the financial market meltdown, the U.S. dollar is seeing a resurgence in forex trading. The loonie is especially hard hit in currency trading on the FX market.

Right now, as commodities waver in the financial market, and as investors head to the dollar as a safe haven, the Canadian dollar is sinking in FX trading. Action Forex reports on where the USD/CAD rally is headed:

USD/CAD's strong rally is still in progress and reaches as high as 1.1647 so far. At this point, intraday bias remains on the upside as long as 1.1416 minor support holds. Next upside target is key medium term resistance at 1.1874 (38.2% retracement of 1.6196 to 0.9056 at 1.1783).

  • Global Markets Decline, Boosting U.S. Dollar in Currency Trading
Greenback up against the euro in forex tradingIt's been a bit of a wild ride. Okay, it's been a lot of a wild ride. And we're not done yet. Even with frantic efforts by various governments around the world to stem the rising tide, things seem to get worse.

As global markets decline, the U.S. dollar gains in currency trading. Once suffering from weakness, it is apparent that even with the U.S. economy in its current state, the greenback is one of the stronger currencies on the FX market right now.

Against the euro in forex trading, the dollar is gaining ground again after a very brief respite yesterday. And CNN Money reports that recession is considered all but a foregone conclusion for the eurozone:

"The winds of recession we portended last month have transformed into a full-blown storm spreading across the (European) continent," said Aurelio Maccario, an economist with UniCredit.

"No banking system and no economy appears safe, and it is now common belief that a recessionary scenario is in the cards also for the euro area."

  • Review: The Golden Compass Best Buy Bonus Disc

Thought I'd drop a word in on the Best Buy Bonus Disc. I've watched the full thing over now and I have to say, things like this make DVDs what they are. There are no deleted scenes, but you sometimes catch the "behind the cameras" view as the cameras are filming small instances of cut footage - things like the Librarian saying "Master" at the end of his first line, or Farder Coram explaining "alethia is Greek, meaning 'truth'."

Keep in mind this is only about forty-five minutes of film, no fancy menu titles involved.

  • Review: Dark Matter - Jeff's Review

Of the several books on Pullman’s His Dark Materials read by this reviewer (about a half-dozen or so), this one is, without a doubt, the best, most insightful and informative of all. Watkins does a superb job of analyzing the background issues (which provide the literary setting for the trilogy) and the stories themselves, both explaining and respectfully criticizing Pullman’s work. In the preface of the book, Watkins states, “I am unashamedly a fan (of the trilogy), but I also take issue with Pullman on the question of his attack on God and Christianity” (page 7). Watkins thus writes as an enthusiast of Pullman’s stories, but also as one who respectfully disagrees with the beliefs and perspective of the author and carefully explains the reasons for his different position.

  • Review: Discovering The Golden Compass - Jeff's Review

Despite its title, George Beahm’s Discovering The Golden Compass is a wide-ranging book that goes far beyond the single topic of The Golden Compass. Besides a section on the three books of the trilogy, this book also includes major sections on the life of Philip Pullman and on various presentations based on Pullman’s work such as live plays and the recently released movie by the same name.

  • Review: The World of the Golden Compass

I received The World of the Golden Compass through the mail today, and after feeling important and official carrying a Global Priority packet (complete with the amazing rip-off strip that English post is sadly lacking!), I was surprised at the size. From the few images of the book I had seen, I expected it to be around A4 size, yet this book is somewhere between A4 and A5, which is perfect for reference books. The cover is very well presented, and I like the image of the Alethiometer that graces the centre - obviously (and quite quickly) computer-rendered, but that adds to the charm of the book, in my view (it also perfectly sums up my review! Stay tuned!). The blurb on the back cover is quirky and refreshing; clearly this book is, although meant for reference, a fun journey through many topics, including why it's a bad idea to have dinner with Mrs Coluter and what to do when your dæmon is your laptop (guilty as charged!). A cursory flick-through gives me great pleasure to say that each essay within this collection is referenced (properly! :D ), and footnotes are everywhere to help with some of the tougher points without the essay deviating from the point.

  • Review: Exploring His Dark Materials

In the preface of her book, Lois Gresh writes: “This book delves into the subjects behind His Dark Materials. As such, it is not a book about the story lines and subplots, the characterization, and the writing style in His Dark Materials. Instead, the focus is on angels, souls, the afterlife, Dust, dark matter, and quantum entanglement: the meat of the books.” Gresh’s book, therefore, is not a literary analysis of Pullman’s stories; instead, it offers a thorough discussion of the topics and subjects dealt with in the stories—topics that form the background of these stories.

  • Review: The Elements of His Dark Materials - Edd's review

This book dropped onto my doormat a little over two weeks ago. The first thing you notice is the size of the book, it is very thick. This is a portend of the extreme levels of detail that are about to be uncovered.

  • ALIPR Learns How to Auto-Tag Photos [Photography]

New image recognition webapp ALIPR (Automatic Linguistic Indexing of Pictures in Real-Time) is a on a mission to assign relevant tags to digital images based on their content, and wants you to help it learn. While digital image recognition has come a long way in recent years, it's still got a long way to go, and ALIPR's got its share of hits and misses. Upload an image to ALIPR or hand it a URL of an image already online, and the engine will suggest tags, and ask you to add to its list. Some of ALIPR's suggestions are spot-on, but others are way off. You can confirm the hits and suggest other tags to help the engine learn. Check out how ALIPR did with a few images from my Flickr photostream.

Given a photos of boats in the harbor and a skyline, ALIPR does pretty well with its tag suggestions:

But a clear photo of a spider doesn't net any tags that apply:

Given a more confusing photo of a rock sculpture outside a building, ALIPR identifies the sky and buildings:

But a clear photo of a fire only returns the "orange" tag, not the word fire:

The concept of ALIPR is super exciting for anyone who's building a library of digital photos, because the most tedious parts of organizing and searching your photos is adding relevant keywords to them. So automatic photo tagging, when done well and accurately, could be a huge time saver. Can't wait to see ALIPR-like technology built-in to a desktop photo organizer like Picasa. In the meantime, you can also use ALIPR's growing library of tagged photos to search for images by keyword as well.

  • Inventory Your Home Storage [Weekend Project]

You just know you have some obscure, need-it-twice-a-year item, like a camping lantern or holiday wrapping paper stashed away somewhere—but where the heck did you put it? The Unclutterer blog recommends a system for creating a permanent storage inventory so you know what you've stored where. In short, number and photograph all the items you've got stowed away in boxes in the basement, and enter them into an Excel spreadsheet, with links to the digital photos on your hard drive. Store a paper copy of each box list in the box itself, and then somewhere off-site, for insurance purposes. This is one of those "I know I should do this" projects that would make finding stuff—and dealing in case of a disaster—so much easier. A quicker way might be just uploading the photos to Flickr, setting them to private, and using tags to note where each item is. How have you kept track of what stuff you have and where it is? Let us know in the comments. Photo by tracyhunter.

  • Firefox Mobile Alpha Screenshot [Screenshots]

The alpha build of Mobile Firefox (codenamed Fennec) has been available for testing by brave Nokia N810 users for some time now, but Mozilla developer Brad Lassey just got it up and running on a Windows Mobile device, and shares a couple of screenshots. Obviously there's quite a bit of work to be done, but it's an exciting preview at what getting Firefox in your pocket will look like in the near future. [via]

  • Convert Record Albums into MP3s [Music]

Got a stack of LPs you want to store on your hard drive instead of on a shelf? Wired's How-To Wiki runs down the steps to convert LPs into MP3s using free software. Of course, you'll need a turntable and a computer with a line-in port on the sound card to get the job done, too. Photo by timsamoff.

  • Create Your Personal Bailout Plan [Economy]

While Wall Street gets its rescue plan in order, the News Tribune says it's time for you to create your own personal bailout plan—by building up your cash, freezing your credit, and "laying off" expenses you don't really need. The Tribune advises:

Do what you can to have at least three to six months of cash to cover bills, in case of a job loss. “Nothing you do financially will help you sleep better at night than knowing you have money tucked away for a rainy day,” said Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com. But pay attention to where you put your savings. If you buy a U.S. savings bond now, for example, you cannot cash it in for 12 months.

Has your savings plan changed in light of the recent "financiapocalypse"? Tell us how in the comments, and see also some of our own advice on how to batten down your hatches in this bad economy.
