Three deer and a cardinal in a mild January.

This photo is from January but I realized I haven’t added it to the Journal yet and I wanted to include this moment of frozen anticipation. At one point I even had the red cardinal on the bird feeder looking at me, along with the three deer, all seeming to say “What’s your business here? Do we stay or do we go?”. I didn’t manage to capture all four of them that way on film the way I would like though.
The Cardinal decided it was time to just keep eating and the deer went back to grazing as well. This was a fairly mild Winter day with only a little snow on the ground.
On the date of this Journal entry we also had a rather cool day here in Michigan, less than 70 degrees fahrenheit, so it got me thinking about cooler seasons and climes. This photo was taken with my trusty pocket camera, the Canon PowerShot. For such a small and convenient camera it takes some good photos. And you can always have it with you.

Once you go to the SmugMug site at the above link there is a “Buy” area right above the photo. You can purchase prints, the photo on objects like t-shirts, and also licenses to use the photo.
I guess I should make the purchasing a little more obvious.

I woke up this morning to find 3 deer exactly like the ones you also encountered in your photograph, grazing in my front yard. It’s February on Cape Cod and I was stunned to see this so I decided to do some research. I live on a fairly busy main road although my house does back up to a state park, I have never seen wild animals at this house before.
Anyway, I wasn’t fast enough with my camera and only caught one and another one running away. Would have been great if I had caught them all together to compare. I was too busy watching them before I decided to leave and get the camera. They were just playing and skipping in the yard and in the center island of my road. Very unusual!
Anyways, thanks for sharing this image (even if it’s a year old). Have a great day.

Thanks for the comment on the photo. I had the advantage of taking this photo in a local public park where the wildlife is fairly well protected and used to wandering “humans”. They live there year round.
Deer normally come together in a “close” during the winter in order to conserve resources and energy. I have some deer around my home as well every winter. My feeling is that they sense that hunting is not allowed in most cities and towns so that is yet another reason why they gravitate to these areas in the winter.
