Imageblog: Sunset Beach at Low Tide

By Robert K. Foster

Sunset Beach at Low Tide

A beach at sunset and low tide.

This low tide picture of a Cape Cod beach at sunset shows the variety of reflections, colors, and shapes that I think a good sunset picture needs. I like the sense of the vast sky, clouds, and atmosphere that it evokes. It is also very close to the actual colors of the scene at the time.

Imageblog: Seaside Trail at Sunset

By Robert K. Foster

Seaside Trail at Sunset

An oceanside trail winds through the tall grass at sunset.

This was one of those days when I re-learned one of the basic tenants of photography, the value and importance of light. The sun was setting very low in the west and the orange hues it was sending across everything were quite amazing. I’m glad I caught some of that color here along with one of my favorite themes, the Path. This photo also gives a good sense of the height of the grass along both sides of the trail. Moving forward into the dark of the trees along this track one feels as if protection, or foreboding, lies ahead.

Imageblog: Wisps of Cloud

By Robert K. Foster

Wisps of Cloud

A pine tree, pond, cattails, and clouds.

I like the way the clouds in this photo appear to be like wisps of smoke coming off the trees. As if a breeze were dissipating a fog that surrounded them. This was early Spring before the trees were fully in bloom again but of course the wisps of cloud is an optical illusion.

Imageblog: Mom, Pop, and Goslings

By Robert K. Foster

Mom, Pop, and Goslings

A pair of Canadian Geese and goslings.

These Canadian Geese actually started their family in a semi-urban location right next to a busy road. Many buildings in the area create these ponds for water runoff and then plant them with native plants. I guess they are good enough for this pair of geese and the other pair that use this same pond. It’s good to see integration of wildlife like this and I wish other developers and home owners had the same attitude about it. Of course I fear for the safety of the chicks being near the road but, if the pensive attitude of the parents towards me was any indication, it seems they are kept well in line by Mom and Dad.

I was interested to see that this pair had six chicks whereas the other pair of geese had twelve chicks. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare. As a cat owner who keeps indoor cats I am thankful that none of my cats would be able to go after chicks of these kind. I suspect Mom and Pop would have something to say about it in any event.

Imageblog: Tree Against Sky

By Robert K. Foster

Tree Against Sky

A black and white image of a tree against the sky.

I still love black and white photographs because they reduce the image down to it’s basic forms, relationships, lines, and contrasts. I think bare, leafless trees make great black and white subjects because the innate structure of the tree is an organic pattern that appeals to the human mind. It’s no coincindence that we we have family “trees”, mindmaps, flow charts, etc. They all follow this basic structure from nature—the tree.

Imageblog: A Dip in the Clouds

By Robert K. Foster

A Dip in the Clouds

A valley with clouds above.

This was taken in early February 2007 on a cold day where the wind was producing some unique cloud formations. I thought it was intrigueing how the little dip of the valley below seemed to mirror the clouds, as if they were being funneled along. The grass is still brown and the trees are bare but the colors were quite beautiful.
